Gainful Employment Found in All Industries and Positions for Students’ Futures with World of Work Program

At Waste Management in El Cajon, collecting garbage is not the only objective in mind. Kaylyn Gonzales, Public Sector Representative of Waste Management, explains that at Waste Management, they do the work they do because they love the city they live in and want to keep it as clean as possible. As students in the Cajon Valley Union School District, a partner of the World of Work, received a virtual behind the scenes tour of Waste Management, they were able to see some possibilities for their future. Another Public Sector Representative of Waste Management, Kristine Costa, took students around their headquarters to look at the waste plant, get ideas about recycling and preserving the environment, and the technology inside the Waste Management garbage trucks. With so many aspects of one company, every student can find a place in the world of work that suits them.

With the World of Work curriculum, hundreds of careers students might have never even heard of are brought to life through four steps: Exploration, Simulation, Meet a Pro, and Practice. In the Meet a Pro level is where students are taken on a virtual trip through chat sessions that stream directly to their classrooms. This way, thousands of students can experience a single virtual field trip. The amazing thing about World of Work is the experiences that students see first-hand and through Meet a Pro chats where they realize that there is dignity in all work. Working for a waste company might not be a typical career that students learn about in school, but there are hundreds of jobs at Waste Management that are the perfect fit for the right person. Whether that job entails driving a garbage truck, public relations, mechanical engineering, or environmental studies, the right job is out there for each child, and the World of Work helps schools reveal that message.
